Fishin’ with Jamie Hess

ocal fisherman Jamie Hess was born and
Lraised in Morrisburg, Ontario. Because
he has spent his life in this area, it also means
he’s come to know the fishing spots on the St.
Lawrence River quite well.

“My favourite place to be is out on the water
in my boat fishing,” said Hess. “One of my
earliest fishing memories is catching a 9-pound
walleye as a young kid and almost getting pulled
out of the boat.”

Although he knows the St. Lawrence River
well, Hess has also spent his fair share of time
exploring a variety of lakes and fishing spots in
Ontario. In fact, his favourite place to fish isn’t
what you’d expect!

“My favourite place to fish is with my buddies
at my hunting camp on Centennial Lake near
Calabogie,” said Hess.
When it comes to his next fishing adventure,
Hess is hoping to head out to a fly-in fish resort,
with a lake packed full of large pike and walleye.
That would be the ultimate next step in Hess’
fishing endeavours.
“My favourite fish species to target is walleye.
I’m fortunate to live on the St. Lawrence where
the fishery is thriving,” said Hess. “My most
notable catch would be my personal best last
fall, which was a 30.75 inch 12-pound walleye.”

Like most of our local fisherman, Hess has
some advice for those non-fishers wondering if
it’s worth it to give it a try. “To someone who has
never fished, I would tell them that it is a great
way to spend time outdoors with family and
friends or by yourself and unplug,” said Hess.

If you see Hess out on the river, make sure to
say hello. Maybe even ask if he has any spots
along the St. Lawrence that he would like to
share with you. After all, he knows it better than
