September’s Game On athlete is young Peter Van
Den Oetelaar. Peter has been playing hockey and
soccer for eight years. This defensive-minded
athlete minds the blueline while he’s on the ice
and minds the net when he’s on the pitch.
“I love stopping the breakaways in soccer,” he
enthuses, “and in hockey I love catching the breakaway player and stopping
them.”
Peter has solid short-term goals for his sports life. He wants to make AA in hockey
and make Blazers again for soccer. As for the longer-term, like for lots of people,
it’s complicated. “I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up,” Peter says.
Playing rep level hockey for the past three seasons, being asked to play spring
hockey, and being a part of the Blazers for the past four years are, he feels, his
most notable accomplishments.
“Sports are important because it brings people together both to play and to cheer,”
Peter says.
