Eight months into 2019, in your opinion, what two outstanding sport moments stand out for you so far this year?
Sports Energy
Gilles Gaudet - Sports Enthusiast - Let’s make those sport moments Canadian sport moments. In fact for all those that think that Toronto is the centre of
the Canadian sports’ universe, let’s make them Toronto focused. The number one story has to be the way the Raptors converted many baseball, hockey, and
football fans when they won the NBA championship on a Thursday night this past June. Coast-to-coast-to-coast it seemed like all Canadians were enraptured

by the Raptors. As they progressed through the NBA playoffs with wins against the Bucks, 76ers, and Magic, an incredible momentum built, culminating in an
incredible win over the defending champs from Golden State. It was so much fun to watch the Raptors win over their American counterparts, often in dramatic

fashion. We hadn’t experienced such fandom since the Jays won consecutive World Series titles in 1992 and 1993.
This August, nineteen year old Canadian tennis phenom Bianca Andreescu became the next big thing in Canadian tennis and maybe the next big thing in the tennis
world with her victory at the Canadian Open. In fact it only took Serena Williams four games into the first set to realize that she wasn’t fit enough with her bad

back to defeat Andreescu. A year ago Bianca was rated outside of the top 200 female tennis players in the world. After her Canadian Open win her world ranking
has risen to an impressive 14th. Will she continue to her meteoric rise to the top of the tennis world or will she struggle and fall as Eugenie Bouchard has in the

past five years? Very few would have predicted these two Canadian success stories a year ago. It will be interesting to see what the year 2020 holds for Canadians.
Jake Lapierre - Conditioning Coach - Sports’ fans have been treated to a number of memorable sports moments this year, so I thought I would list a few

before choosing two favourites. February 5th, Tom Brady and the Patriots do it again, winning their sixth NFL Super Bowl championship solidifying their
dynasty in NFL history books. May 13th, fans lost their minds when the miraculous Kawhi Leonard four bounce buzzer beater sent the Toronto Raptors to the

Eastern Conference Finals. August 11th, Bianca Andreescu became the first woman to win the Roger’s Cup Tennis tournament in 50 years and left an endearing
impression with fans around the world for her tremendous talent, sportsmanship, and compassion for Serena Williams who had to retire from the match because
of injury.

In my opinion, the most memorable sports moments so far this year are, April 14th — cheers could be heard from all areas of the course as the leaderboard was
changing every few minutes. The crowd exploded in cheers when Tiger Woods made his final put to win his fifth Masters tournament. The number one moment

has to be June 13th, when the city of Toronto erupted hearing the final buzzer inside Oracle Arena in Oakland California; the Toronto Raptors defeated the Golden
State Warriors and became the 2019 “We The North” NBA Champions. This year has produced great moments for sports; let’s see what the rest of the year brings!
Jim Riddell - Seaway Karate Club - The St. Louis Blues winning the Stanley Cup for the first time in the team’s 52 year history is a big enough sports story,

but the way that they did it made it even bigger. In early January the Blues were at the bottom of the standings. Goaltender Jordan Binnington was called up and
got things going with a shutout in his first NHL game. By the end of the season the Blues had climbed into 3rd place in the Central Division. They then beat the

Jets, Sharks, and Stars on their way to the finals where they defeated the Boston Bruins, winning the Stanley Cup on home ice. The second event was Tony Luis’s
June fight vs Adrian Estrella. It was a crossroads fight with the winner likely to move up in the rankings. Both fighters had similar records, with Luis at 27-3 and
Estrella at 28-4. Estrella, who is four years younger than Luis, had 24 KO’s and was just coming off a big win over previously unbeaten Oscar Duarte. Tony Luis

fought a great fight winning a majority decision over a top 20 opponent and solidifying his position as a world class boxer. The fight card was one of the best that
I been to – it compares very favourably with any that you would find in Montreal, Toronto, or in the US casinos. Two world class fighters in the main event, a

second title fight in the co-feature, preceded by a top quality undercard – and it took place right here in Cornwall.
