of coaching I have yet to see a player not improve their skills in some capacity. The
best feeling is when I see a weaker team - especially in the season’s first half - begin to Squad. “Hopefully this will continue through

compete and win some games in the later half of the season and start to surprise some of Grade 8 and into high school,” says Erin. “I enjoy the social aspects of dance and pep
the league’s stronger teams. That is so cool to see. squad. Physically, it can sometimes be a challenge, but I don’t find it too strenuous.

The other thing that I think is great is how sports can be used to share and teach great Both dance and pep squad promote teamwork and school spirit. With swimming, I
values. As a team, we can learn to treat our opponents with respect. For example, after like getting better at new strokes, but I really just like being in the water.”
winning or losing a game, everybody lines up to shake hands with their opponents and Erin enjoys being at school because she has a great group of friends. She says she

cheering like it’s the Stanley Cup every time a goal is scored, or even better, we can stop

running up the score. As a team, we can treat the officials with respect. If we don’t like
a call, we can keep our composure and be respectful. Some calls go for us and some go
against us… That’s the way it is and it’s not the end of the world. And as a team, we can
treat coaches, fellow players and parents with respect. These are excellent values that
team sports can teach the kids and as they grow older, they can pass on these values to
their own children as parents or to their own players as future coaches.
And lastly, one of the best parts of coaching is it allows me to spend quality time with Max Ming, P. Eng
my three sons and their teammates and friends. Learning sports with our kids, learning Financial Planning • Investments • Insurance
