                                                  Are there really 50 different words for snow in some northern native languages?
                                                Winters are long at the North Pole and it is snow-covered up to nine months a year. Claims that the Yupik and Inuit languages have over 50 words for
                                                snow is first loosely attributed to anthropologist Franz Boas who, among others, pointed out that the word ‘snow’ is often included in compound words
                                                and put together as a single term (a process called polysynthesis) to describe types of snow, various snow conditions or even snow on various surfaces.
                                                Examples include qanik (falling snow), aputi (snow on the ground), pirta (blizzard) and hiryla (snow in a beard). What about having words for falling
                                                ice cream, or, ice cream in a beard? Bicycles, not icicles. Parks, not parkas. If you don’t like winter, this puzzle will warm your heart.
