June’s Athlete of the Month, Sam Vanegas, is a junior at St.
Joe’s who is playing for the senior boys’ soccer team. “I usually
play as a right or left winger, which is part of the offense,” Sam
explains. “However, with my school team I have been playing
as a center midfielder, where you must not only help the offense
but the defense as well. It’s a difficult position but an important
one that I find just as fun as playing winger.”
When he’s not playing soccer, Sam is working hard in school. He wants to pursue mechanical
engineering as a career. “I find this field of study suits me well because of my strong interest in
math and science,” he says. “My goal for soccer is to reach my full potential as a player. Just like
anything I like to do, I always try to improve as much as possible, and if I can get as far as playing
for a college team or even getting a scholarship, that would be great.”
Sam figures he’s been playing soccer for about nine years. He enjoys the simplicity of the sport.
He feels soccer brings people from different backgrounds together in a fun way.
Sam is also an accomplished runner who has finished a 10k in under 45 minutes.
