Stories And More About The People In Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry
Will the Erik Karlsson trade bring the Penguins another Stanley Cup?
Jake Lapierre - Conditioning Coach -The Pittsburgh Penguins acquisition of Erik Karlsson in my opinion is a positive
improvement to the team’s roster for a couple of reasons. Management managed to purge contracts of some players who were
under-achieving and frankly making more money than the team was willing to dish out. Adding Karlsson onto the teams
back-end changes the look of the defensive core, spotting Chris Letang on a second defensive pairing. The fresh look could
provide Karlsson the opportunity to rack up additional points this season, who knows, maybe a seventy or eighty-point season,
especially with a Crosby, Malkin, and Karlsson power play unit. I believe the Penguins core players still have plenty of game in
them and are not ready to give up. Good on Kyle Dubas for providing them the opportunity to make some noise this season. I
think a Stanley Cup is a long shot, but it should make for some entertaining hockey.
Jim Riddell - Seaway Karate Club - The addition of Erik Karlsson will help to get Pittsburg Penguins back into the playoffs
this season. Last year was the first time that the Penguins missed the playoffs since Sidney Crosby’s rookie season in 2005-06.
Karlsson, a three-time Norris winner, coming off a 101-point season, is one of the best players in the NHL at creating offence.
Having him on the team will give Crosby and Evegny Malkin a dimension that they have never had previously. Last season
Crosby and Malkin both played all 82 games, had 176 points combined, and the team still missed the post season. Crosby is
now 36 years old; Malkin is 37, and Karlsson 33. All three of them have a few good years of hockey left, but the window of
opportunity is now starting to close and the Penguins goaltending and depth are still questionable. Winning a Stanley Cup is
never easy, and the present competition is very strong. Will the Erik Karlsson trade bring the Penguin’s another Stanley Cup?
As Erik Karlsson’s friend, mentor, and former Ottawa Senator teammate Daniel Alfredsson once said, - “Probably not.”
Peter Collins - Sports Enthusiast - Any doubts that Pittsburgh Penguins were all in for the upcoming NHL season were laid
to rest this past August. Acquiring Erik Karlsson confirmed that while the Pens big three of Crosby, Malkin, and Letang are
aging, it was time to add the fourth piece to that trio by trading for Karlsson. Erik gives the Penguins one of the most dynamic
defencemen in the league, who’s defensive deficiencies are overcome by his best-in-class offense. Hopefully for Dubas’ sake
his Karlsson acquisition works out better than his Tavares acquisition five years ago. Lost in this big trade is the other yeoman
like work that Kyle Dubas has performed to put this team back in the contender picture. He locked up goalie Tristan Jarry to a
long-term deal, as well as adding Reilly Smith, Ryan Graves, and Lars Eller to the Pens mix. He also added a few other role and
depth players to the mix. Will the moves by Dubas do what he couldn’t do in Toronto, have playoff success? The difference is
that Letang, Malkin, and Crosby have the Stanley Cup pedigree that was missing in Toronto, so adding Karlsson was a brilliant
move, because the Pens are in win now territory. It says here the two big ifs are, will the “Big Four” stay healthy, and will Jarry
be able to provide championship goaltending. Wouldn’t it be great if they meet the Leafs in the playoffs!
