Perry Blanchard’s “Titan-ic” Junior A Lacrosse Challenge
By Staff Writer
hen something is in your blood, it never leaves
Wyour system. Five years ago, Perry Blanchard left
his hometown for the wide open spaces of Alberta, and
Edmonton was where he landed. On February 12, Perry
Blanchard was named head coach of the Sherwood Park
Titans of Alberta’s Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League
and this opportunity literally came by word of mouth.
There is an old maxim, “it helps if you know someone”
and although he didn’t know it at the time, Perry actually
started the ball rolling a few years ago. His association
with Cornwall Minor Lacrosse and the Akwesasne Jr. A
Indians allowed for a brief associate coaching stint with
the Jr. A Okotoks Raiders (south of Calgary) in 2013
under coach Dave Pym, who now coaches the NLL’s
Buffalo Bandits. When Pym’s Raiders needed a Jr. A
calibre goalie, Perry contacted his old friend in Cornwall
Roy Ledoux, GM of the Indians. Roy just happened to
have the piece required. So when the Titans were in need
of a coach, Okotoks suggested they give Blanchard a call.
It will be a family affair with sons Jamie coaching his
offence and Taylor handling the video. “We have a core
of twelve players returning. The problem here is the same
everywhere: all the teams have many of their players at
U.S. colleges. Waiting for them allows development of
younger players. I think we will be okay,” he states. One
thing Perry Blanchard will not find different is that his
Titans will wear the same colours as the Celtics. Is there
a Minto Cup in his future? It’s a long road to travel (win
the RMLL and then venture west into that hotbed of B.C.
lacrosse), but Perry and his boys are up to the challenge
and Sports Energy will be watching. Jamie, Perry and Taylor Blanchard will bring their “A” game each night Submitted Photo
