MURPHY’S SPORTS LAW By David Murphy
W hat a season for local sports fans! Cornwall and area fans kicked off the spring sports calendar with the successful Fred Page Cup
WEastern Canadian Championship. When you combine roughly 100 sponsors, 100 volunteers, passionate hockey fans, and good
Junior A hockey, you get a tournament that raised the bar for future events -- at least according to the three league Commissioners who
were there all week.
Coinciding with the Fred Page Cup was the early launch of Cornwall Motor Speedway. Race fans proved, once again, that DIRT motor
sports thrive in Eastern Ontario by taking in as much racing action as they could handle in one month. The Speedway is the trend setter
when it comes to racing in Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec, or Northern New York State. And while the Fred Page Cup wrapped up the
Junior A season for the Colts, the Speedway’s season is just beginning – here’s to a long, sunny summer.
The 51st Benson Cornwall Lions Club Sports Awards Dinner showcased some of the best athletes, coaches and volunteers we have to
offer. From the Jacques Richard Trophy winner for top sports personality, curler Mathew Camm, to the top junior, Abby Jurchuk, winner

Sophia Dorie, Savannah Ingola, Amy Wang, and Brianna Lauzon brought home Gold. There’s word their showcases will need to be reinforced with all the
hardware the girls keep bringing home.
That brings us to Jenna Flannigan. She won the 2013 Jacques Richard Trophy after leading Team Canada to a Bronze Medal in that year’s Women’s World
Cup of Baseball Championships. She’ll be once again looking to lead Canada’s offence at this year’s Pan Am Games. It’s too bad baseball isn’t an Olympic sport
because we could have been proud of yet another Olympian from Cornwall.
Combine all that with the kick offs to Wildcats Football, Kinsmen Girls Softball, Seaway Valley Soccer, the continue work of both Cornwall MMA, and Champs
Eastside Boxing Club, Multi-Sports Club, River Rats Baseball, and the Cornwall Weightlifting Club and it’s a great time to be a sports fan in Cornwall and area.
