to host the pre-tournament games
of the 2017 IIHF World Junior
Championship, extending the
excitement of world-class hockey
outside of the two tournament host-
cities, Montreal and Toronto. The 10-
game initiative was set out by Hockey
Canada and RBC to celebrate the
country’s 150th anniversary. Ottawa,
Kingston, Chateauguay, Sherbrooke,
and Oshawa were among other host
cities to welcome the World Juniors.

Athlete of the Month
Mac McRae
Mac is a defenceman on this year’s Char-Lan Peewee Rep
hockey team. His coach, Jason MacCuaig, describes Mac
as a solidifying force on defence. “He rarely, if ever, gets
caught out of position, is difficult to get around, and he
gets shots on goal from the point,” explains MacCuaig.
McRae, who wears #13, is also described as a quiet leader,
exemplifying sportsmanship, while still displaying a great
desire to win.
Mac, who is a Grade 7 student at Char-Lan District High
School, really enjoys playing hockey. When asked what he
likes about the sport he states, “It’s a team sport that is high speed and challenging because of
all of the different skills you need to learn and be able to do.” But, his love of sports doesn’t
stop at hockey. During the summer months, Mac can be found on the soccer field playing for
the Char-Lan GSL boys’ team and, at school, he claims he will try out for just about anything,
just to get better at playing it.
Recently, Mac and his teammates travelled to Pierrefonds, Quebec to participate in the Can-
Am Peewee Challenge. Mac describes the tournament as fun, especially because the Rebels
won the B Final and he almost scored. About the Char-Lan Peewee Rep squad he states, “It’s
fun playing on this team. I have a lot of buddies on the team.”
Good luck to you and your teammates going forward into the second half of the season, Mac!
