Q&A
Hi JR,
I followed the Colts when you played here. My question, I have a son and daughter, who both play competitive sports (aged 9 and 7). Some parents on their
teams don’t seem to care about winning and losing; that everyone should get the “Participation” award and scores don’t count. At what age do you feel we
should instill the values that winning and losing in sports and life teach us?
I think it is really based on the individual and, what I mean by that, is the question is really about competitiveness. The desire to win and the inner drive to suc-
ceed comes from the individual. Society puts the pressure on the outcome. The outcome, we know it as, is win and lose. Whereas the actual focus and attention
should be brought to the process, because at the end of the day that is all we have control over. Did we prepare well enough, did I get enough sleep, did I eat the
right way, did I supplement correctly, was my recovery adequate, did I have the inner fire to go the extra mile, did I train enough to allow myself to go the extra
mile? That trope of focus and attention should be addressed at a young age, and when that is addressed the inner desire to win will come from that child.
Until next time, stay hungry stay humble. JR
