Cornwall Novice Black Wins Silver at 35th Annual
By Casey Leger
he Cornwall Girls’ Hockey Association’s 35th Annual House League
TTournament, which ran from the 9th of November to the 11th at the Benson
Centre, is one that the young ladies on the Cornwall Novice Black team and
their coach Mark Kench will fondly remember. They were the only Cornwall
team to medal at the event, taking home silver.
“Our tournament got off to a rocky start. On Friday morning we took a 6-1
loss to Kanata,” says Kench. “Our next three games we won without too much
trouble. With our 3-1 record we ended up a very good 3rd out of 13 teams.”
But fate had a surprise in store for the Cornwall Novice Black squad: They
stepped onto the ice to face the same Kanata team that pummelled them in the
first round. “This is where it is probably easier to be a kid than a parent” says
Kench of his team. “They went out as if they had never seen this team before
and beat them 4-3.” Next, Cornwall Black took a close game from Cornwall
Grey and then lost to a strong Russell team in the final.
Kench is proud of his team. “The girls worked really hard,” he says. Despite
the fact that he’s fairly new to his head coaching role, Kench has been playing
hockey for 35 years, and he refereed for 18 seasons. The girls he coaches at the
novice level are 7 and 8-years old. “I enjoy the fact that I get to be one of their
first hockey coaches. They are very open to any style or technique.” He says
that patience is one of the key ingredients in his coaching philosophy.
With four children of his own, Kench, a Hydroelectric Operating Supervisor
at RH Saunders Generating Station, and his family keep busy year ‘round on
the rink and the soccer pitch. He credits his wife, Melissa, with being very Photo Submitted
understanding.
