Q&A Hi Justin, I play Bantam rep hockey, one of my teammates brought in a paper with your In The Zone Column. We have a question for you. Since
Atom rep, coaches would come in the room and yell at us to think hockey, think about the game, and get mentally prepared. They are usually mad
at us because when they come in we are usually joking around and laughing. Not one of them has ever told us how to be mentally prepared for the game. Can
you tell us how? Thanks and Merry Christmas.
The biggest thing is this has to be done on an individual basis. It takes experience and maturity to really understand what it takes to play on a game-to-game basis.
However there are 3 things you can do at any level to ensure you are ready and mentally preparing:
1- Consistency (know what it is you need to do. Have a routine and stick to it. That way when things start to falter you can look at your routine and adjust
accordingly)
2- Breath and visualize (the 5 minutes before warm up, and going back out for the period should be spent breathing and visualizing what it is you need to do to
be successful that period. That will help you feel more conformable when you find yourself actually in those situations. It will also help appease your coaches!!
Haha)
3-Have a safe word (what I mean by this is identify one word that brings you back to a relaxed confident state. No matter what is happening around you something
that you can say or look at that will bring you back to a positive and confident performance state.
