Contact sports have to change with
the times as equipment improves
and safety practices adapt to keep
athletes safe and healthy. Football
is no exception.
“Football has changed
immensely in the last 5 years,”
says Camplin. “The equipment has
improved to better protect athletes.
All coaches are now registered and
need to take certifications to allow
them on the field. There is less
emphasis on full-contact practices,
and the general emphasis on
‘hitting’ has declined. Everything
we do now is to lessen the chance
of injury, especially head injuries.”
Camplin knows what he’s talking
about. He has been president of the
Wildcats since 2014, when he took
the reins from local football coach
and personality Rod Simpson.
Camplin credits Simpson with
getting him involved with the
Wildcats in the first place.
Camplin’s football bona fides are
impressive. He played linebacker
at the University of Ottawa; he’s
coached all levels with the Wildcats
over 12 years, he coached with
Team Ontario from 2012 to 2015,
and he spent 5 years as an assistant
coach with Carleton University.
The Wildcats have an impressive
record locally. Since its inaugural
2006 season, Camplin estimates
that an average of 350 young
people a year have benefitted from
the football program. That’s a
little over four thousand children
and teens.
The Wildcats run teams from the
Tyke level, for 7, 8, and 9-year-
olds, to OFC, which tops off at 19.
“There’s a place on a football team
for athletes of every shape and
size,” says Camplin. That, and the
discipline and sense of belonging
that playing on a team provides,
is one of the things that he loves
about the game.
