December’s MVP of the month was submitted by Cornwall
Girls’ Hockey Association novice coach, Mark Kench.
“Makya is a second-year player,” says Kench. “She is
the size of a first-year player and has the skating ability
of Atom player. She played defence last year, and that is
probably one of the reasons she is always one of the first
back to our zone, whether playing forward or D.”
According to Kench, in the past month Makya has had
a couple of two-goal games and she scored a hat trick in
the quarter finals of the recent CGHA tournament. “She
has the skill to effortlessly stick handle through crowds of
players and the hockey sense to wait for rebounds after she shoots. Doing the latter has
gotten her at least three goals this year,” he says.
According to her mother, Makya’s favourite subjects in school are gym and art! “Makya has
been playing hockey since she was four,” says Makya’s mom, Daphnie, “and the thing she
loves the most about hockey is being with the other girls and having fun.”
