Canadian Curling Association and is usually played
for by teams in Ontario and Quebec. If won, the
cup must be defended within a two week window.
As it stands…….. if you defend the cup and lose, it
takes between 5 and 7 years before your club is able
to challenge for the cup again. There is upwards of
80 curling clubs that are eligible to participate in
this competition. The Cornwall Curling Club first
competed for the Challenge Cup in December 1959
and has held the cup a few times since then.
Getting back to the Cornwall Club’s history the
1st facility was located at the south east corner of
First St. and Augustus and was destroyed by fire
in 1908. Curling in Cornwall came to a standstill
with no facility and of course the two world wars
also contributed to the hiatus. The sport of curling
was resurrected in 1946 with curling taking place
at the Water Street Arena (which has since been
torn down). A new facility was built in 1948 at the
bottom of Augustus and was the mainstay of curling
in Cornwall until the new and present facility was
opened in September 2004.
Upcoming events include the in-house Winterspiel
at the end of January and the Ladies’ Invitational Quebec Challenge Cup Ormstown 2015
being held in early February. Until next month may L to R; Rob Manon, Jeff Bethune, Scott McDonald, Kevin Baker, Mat Camm, Matt Dupuis, Terry
