Swimming with the Sea Lions: Dryland Training

        By Victoria Klassen

hile it may seem like Sea Lions swimmers live
Win the water, not all of their training happens in
a pool. Many of the Cornwall Sea Lions Swim Club’s
athletes can often be found at Caveman Strong doing
        dryland training.

Coach Cory Kyer explains that Caveman Strong
provides strength, stability, and flexibility training for
        Sea Lions athletes.

“Dryland for swimming is critical to a swimmer’s
development. It helps prevent injury by strengthening
smaller muscle groups, and it challenges the athlete to
execute movement patterns under a greater load than in
the pool. Athletes tap into new sources of power and
speed on land, translating to greater performances in the
        water,” said Kyer.

While dryland training is not mandatory for Sea
Lions athletes, it is highly recommended. Many of the
junior competitive group athletes, ages 12 and under,
go to Caveman Strong once a week, while many in the
junior elite, senior competitive, and senior elite groups
go three times a week. Photo credit: Chaddycreates
