What is COVID 19, how can it be managed

                                                        and why get vaccinated?

CSDGPS Paramedics have joined the Eastern Ontario Health Unit in administering COVID-19 vaccines to our most vulnerable residents. We are
encouraging you to get vaccinated when you can and contribute to this international effort in stopping the pandemic and saving lives.
COVID-19 often produces, among other symptoms, severe acute respiratory distress that is resistant to treatment: SARS-CoV-2, the medical name
for the virus that causes COVID-19, presents a serious threat to life. It first appeared in China in the fall of 2019 and has since spread across the world,
recognized as a pandemic by the World Health Organization in March 2020.
This virus is highly transmissible, and the new strains are even more so. It spreads between individuals by respiratory droplets and aerosols, and the virus can stay in a poorly
ventilated area for up to one hour after being released through coughing, sneezing, etc.
The best way to protect yourself is avoid all contact with others. When you must be near others, wear a mask, wash hands frequently, and clean common surfaces often.
The ongoing pandemic continues to deeply affect multiple sectors of our society, including the health care system, the economy, and human social interaction. A vaccine
that will allow building immunity appears as the most appropriate solution to control the situation and eventually return to life to normal.
Two vaccines have been approved for usage in Canada so far: Pfizer-BioNtech and Moderna. Studies have proven that two doses, given three weeks apart, produces
          excellent immunity results (>90% effectiveness).
Vaccines are usually produced in six phases: research, preclinical preparation, clinical trials, approval, manufacturing, and distribution, which often takes years to complete.
In the case of the COVID-19 vaccines, knowledge regarding other previously known types of coronavirus has allowed researchers to hasten the process. This allowed the
vaccine to be produced in six months. The fast production of the vaccine was supported by international cooperation and the high priority the scientific community placed
          upon the project.

We often ask you to be your family’s fire prevention hero.
We ask you to test your smoke alarms, plan your escape route, and practice safe cooking, home heating, and backyard
campfires. I have a new mission for you. Can you help us help you? For your own safety and the safety of others,
all you have to do is shovel!
First, ensure all exits from your home are cleared, including an escape path to your meeting place. The front, back, and/
or side doors, including patios and porches, should be kept clear of snow. This will help ensure you have several options
to escape your home in case of fire.
The second snow removal request is at the fire hydrant closest to your home. So far this winter, we have had very little snowfall, but as snow
continues to accumulate, take a look at the hydrant on your block. Is it getting snowed in?
Municipal Works staff will clear snow when they can, but you can help. A fire hydrant clear of snow will help firefighters access the water
they need safely and quickly. Your local fire hydrant does an incredible job of helping to save lives and property. Help us ensure we have
quick access to your fire hydrant by shoveling around it so that we don’t waste valuable time searching for it and digging it out.
Here are a few other timely tips to help ensure you are preventing fires in your home:
                 1. If you are using a space heater, keep it three feet or one metre away from anything that can burn – including people. Choose
a heater with a thermostat as well as overheat and tip over protection. Place your heater on a solid, flat surface.
                 2. It is not too late to get your furnace inspected. Carbon monoxide is silent and deadly. Prevent exposure to carbon monoxide
by installing carbon monoxide alarms and scheduling annual inspections of all fuel-burning appliances.
                 3. Finally, look at your kitchen. Have you moved combustible materials away from the stove? Is there a fire extinguisher nearby?
