        Fishin’ with Jacob Paavila

        By Molly Kett

23-year-old Jacob Paavila was born and raised
in Cornwall, and his favourite hobby, as he likes
to call it, is fishing with a chance of catching.
“I think one of the things I love about fishing
most is being outdoors. There’s so many
beautiful views of the lakes, ponds, rivers,
trees, and the sounds of animals in the distance,”
says Paavila. “But you can’t forget the feeling of
a tug on your line from your bait going smooth
through the water to your rod bent over. There is
        no better feeling!”

Paavila began fishing at a very young age.
The sport has always been part of his family, so
at a very young age, he would go out with his
grandfather for the weekend to Grenville QC,
where his grandfather had been a member to a
        private pond that stocked trout.
“Him and I would troll around for hours, and
I had got my first feeling of not fishing, but
catching,” says Paavila. “I did not know what to
do! I had never felt a fish fight like this. It was
not a sunfish or a perch. My grandpa helped me
get the fish in and it was a rainbow trout I had
caught; I was so excited I almost rocked the boat Photo Submitted
        right over into the water.”
cast with my lure and I caught a decent sized on the season. Next, Paavila would like to try
When it comes to Paavila’s favourite fishing
memory, however, it took place in his more salmon on a medium rod and 10-pound fishing fishing in Lake of the Woods, Manitoba. The
braid! It was quite the fight and I almost lost it area holds his favorite species of fish to catch,

as I was reeling in. I got it up onto the concrete trophy fish such as northern pike, walleye,

I say try it at least once because it’s not only

fish and make memories with. There’s never a
good spot for fishing. So, we unpacked our gear and we landed it!”
dull moment fishing. It is always a memorable

soaked. He had jumped in with his phone, keys, caught a walleye that was around 4 pounds and
had wanted to try something before we decided and wallet just to save the catch. It was, after all,
to move areas. I have a 7-inch red devil fishing his biggest catch yet. had a chunk taken out of his fin from a bigger
lure and there was a lot of current, so I had pike or muskie which was pretty cool to see. The

come. Well, that is exactly what happened. One sticking to Cornwall and Lancaster depending catch a buzz, and never go home skunked.”
