Fishin’ with Jacob Paavila
By Molly Kett
23-year-old Jacob Paavila was born and raised
in Cornwall, and his favourite hobby, as he likes
to call it, is fishing with a chance of catching.
“I think one of the things I love about fishing
most is being outdoors. There’s so many
beautiful views of the lakes, ponds, rivers,
trees, and the sounds of animals in the distance,”
says Paavila. “But you can’t forget the feeling of
a tug on your line from your bait going smooth
through the water to your rod bent over. There is
no better feeling!”
Paavila began fishing at a very young age.
The sport has always been part of his family, so
at a very young age, he would go out with his
grandfather for the weekend to Grenville QC,
where his grandfather had been a member to a
private pond that stocked trout.
“Him and I would troll around for hours, and
I had got my first feeling of not fishing, but
catching,” says Paavila. “I did not know what to
do! I had never felt a fish fight like this. It was
not a sunfish or a perch. My grandpa helped me
get the fish in and it was a rainbow trout I had
