Stories And More About The People In Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry
Should Leaf ownership do a complete overhaul of management and the players, or should
they exercise patience with the present group?
Jake Lapierre - Conditioning Coach - Leaf Nations high expectations to advance to round 3 in the 2023 playoffs were dramatically
snuffed out after dropping 4 games to 1 to the hard checking position play Florida Panthers, and an extremely zoned in goaltender named
Sergei Bobrovki.
The unfolding events of the past few weeks were somewhat predictable; if expectations were not achieved, heads were gonna roll, and
exercising patience was not part of the game plan. The hunt for a new GM is underway as the Leafs organization quickly decided not to
renew Kyle Dubas contract, so Dubas brushed off the Toronto dust from his shoes and appears to be finalizing a deal to take up residency
in Pittsburgh. The Leafs are in limbo right now, leaving many players with unanswered questions! A major overhaul is underway and
I’m looking forward to seeing what unfolds.
Jim Riddell - Seaway Karate Club - A complete overhaul may not be necessary, but the time for exercising patience has come and gone,
with changes now underway. MLSE, the Leafs owners, can’t be happy with the early exit as it has cost the company many millions of
dollars in potential playoff revenue. There are several decisions coming very shortly, as a game plan needs to be in place before the
entry draft June 28-29 and the beginning of Free agent signings on July 1st. First a new GM must be hired to replace Kyle Dubas, then
a decision made on whether or not to retain head coach Sheldon Keefe and his staff. The team will need to have a good understanding
of what Austin Matthew’s next contract will look like. If indications are that he is looking for a healthy raise on his $11.64M contract,
it may not be possible to keep the “Core Four” together under the present salary cap. Does the new GM move Mitch Mariner before
his no-trade clause kicks in this summer? Does goalie Ilya Samsonov get signed to a new contract and does Matt Murray get bought
out? With many decisions yet to be made and only seven forwards currently under contract, the Toronto Maple Leafs will be a different
looking team next season.
Peter Collins - Sports Enthusiast - Well, the overhaul has begun, Kyle Dubas is out, and Leaf fans are wondering what’s next and
who’s next. Since Shanahan pulled the plug on Dubas he should be safe, but little else is for certain in Leaf land. The Stanley Cup
favoured Toronto team was exposed against the Panthers, basically they are a team of too much Marner and not enough Tkachuk. That
is to say that they need more players like Matthew Tkachuk to go further in the playoffs. The Leafs made it to round two for the first
time in 19 years. Even though they beat the Lightning, they didn’t look that good doing so. They ran into an unusually cold Andrei
Vasilevskiy, who’s .875 save percentage was by far one of the worst of his career. With Boston out of the way, it looked like an easy path
to the Eastern final, but an annoying Florida squad, and an almost impenetrable Sergei Bobrovsky, shut down the Leafs. The big four
of Tavares, Marner, Nylander, and Matthews did little in the way of contributing offensively and they are being blamed for the loss. So,
what does Shanahan do next? Well first search for a GM, to replace Dubas, and with the draft so close, it will be hard for a new GM to
put things in place. For now, Shanahan is the temporary GM, he will most likely keep Sheldon Keefe on as coach, and try to move some
players. Moving Tavares would be ideal, but with his big contract and his age, that will not be easy. Matthews is likely to sign a long-
term deal with Toronto, so he should be staying put. That leaves Marner and Nylander, and chances are that one or both of them could
be gone by the time the fall rolls around. The big question is are there any Tkachuk’s available?
