         Training Camp Gem

         By Thom Racine

earching for memorabilia has become a
Sretirement project with seemingly no end
in sight. Sure, it can get slow at times, but all
I have to do is pick up a magazine from my
1950’s era publications and a hockey story is
just waiting to be told - again!

Then there are the hidden pieces that simply
drop on my lap. Blake Noon was in touch with
Sports Energy recently and thought he would
share his piece of early 1960’s memorabilia.

When we think of current day training, the
athletes of today are constantly in the gym,
have personal trainers, or work out in groups.
They measure body fat, use supplements
and drink protein drinks, and work on areas
of their bodies that will suit their personal
strengths and goals. Staying healthy and in Jim Pappin
shape is a year-round chore or passion for 1963-64
most high level athletes and its big industry Topps Rookie card
         to be sure. sourced from
                                                           the internet.
When Blake Noon forwarded this letter
from Maple Leafs GM ‘Punch’ Imlach to
future NHL star Jim Pappin in 1962, I am sure
Jim worked hard to achieve the necessary
requirements demanded on him by Imlach.

Pappin did not make the team that year,
but he would figure to be a big piece of the
Stanley Cup teams of 1964 & 1967. He was
traded to Chicago in one of the worst trades
         ever in 1968.

Have a read and then smile - especially
at the old Leafs’ joke - something Punch
Imlach never would have seen coming during
the three-cup run of 1962-63-64. In case
you miss it, golf clubs were a requirement
at Leafs’ training camp. With exception of
1967 and this year asidae, what a visionary
         you were Punch!
