Question: The COVID19 pandemic is creating havoc around the world in all aspects of people’s lives.
Sports Energy
From a sports perspective, in what way might the pandemic create lasting changes or affects to sports?
Gilles Gaudet - Sports Enthusiast - Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all of our lives will be forever altered, and our world will undergo a

drastic transformation. The world of sport will not be an exception, and this pandemic will change the future of sport in many ways.
This pandemic is the first event that has affected the world, not just a city, not just a country, not just a continent, but the entire population
that inhabits Earth. People, companies, governments, and sports will examine their Risk Management plans and re-evaluate how they do

business. Teams and leagues will start recovery plans that will extend into the near future. There will be no flipping of a switch; this will not
be a turn-key operation. It will be tedious and time consuming, as the globe awakens from this social distancing bad dream. Sports owners
and all those associated with the business will lose millions of dollars. World-wide, the sporting business is a 160 billion-dollar proposition,

and the belt tightening because of these huge losses will happen very quickly. I imagine owners will look at recouping some of these dollars
by cutting salaries, laying people off, and re-negotiating contracts. They should seek financial advice from Eugene (Pandemic) Melnyk; he’s

been operating under these parameters for years!
We should all take this so-called break from sports to get outside more, take a walk, or ride a bike. For most of us, this is a time of opportunity,
not a catastrophe.

people’s lives, the health care system, and most importantly the staggering loss of life.
Fighting and ending this war is entirely dependent upon each individual taking this crisis seriously and listening to what the health experts
are advising us to do; stay home, obey quarantine criteria, practice physical distancing, be mindful of safe hygiene by being careful of your

surroundings, washing hands often, covering coughs and sneezes, and not putting others at risk.
It’s without question that this devastating disease will have lasting effects on all aspects of our lives, including the sports world. From a sports

perspective, I believe this crisis will inspire innovative hygiene changes to sports equipment to prevent the spread of disease, force hygiene
regulations for upgrades to facilities, implement new testing regulations for athletes, create new rules for hygiene practices for all sports
organizations from minor organizations to pro sports, and amateur athletics to the Olympics. These rules have already begun, as Japan has

under control.

Jim Riddell - Seaway Karate Club - Here we are entering the final week of March and the COVID-19 pandemic has the world around us
seemingly changing by the hour. All sports have come to a complete halt and don’t appear to be starting back up anytime soon. This is the

first time ever that sports have been affected globally - the only comparable is the cancellation of the Tour de France and the Olympic games
during WW2 and, from a North American perspective, the one week cancellation of MLB and NFL events following 9/11. The longer that this
drags on, the greater the impact. Avid sports fans will continue to attend games, but at least initially, many will have second thoughts about
Greater Cornwall & Areas Community Sports Newspaper
being in a large crowd and will watch from home. Pro sports are a big business and, in the future, teams, player unions, and TV networks will
all be looking to protect their own interests should there be another pandemic. At some point, life will get back to normal and the games will
return. In the meantime, stay safe.
