PUNCTUATION PANDEMONIUM
Are there really 50 different words for snow in some northern native languages?
In the 3rd century BC, some languages of the day were scriptio continua, meaning everythingwaswrittenlikethisandheyisn’tthisreallyhardtoread
Then Greek librarian Aristophanes introduced dots . for pausing. Later, the new Roman empire took over, and insisted the speaker should exert
discretion over the rhythm of speech and not be bound by dots for pausing. From the 7th century onward right up to the 19th century, various
punctuation marks were introduced and finally standardized.
New symbols have been introduced, such as the ‘Interrobang’, the “Double Point’ and the scornful ‘SarcMark’. Add to this, techniques such as
bolding, underlining, italics, and of course, those ‘in your face’ emojis, are used to isolate, emphasize or highlight certain key words or phrases.
