Summer always seems to end too soon, and part of the reason for that is the way we, in Canada, manage to cram a whole lot of living into a few short
months of good weather. There was also a lot going on in the sports world, and that held many people’s attention on an ongoing basis. Thinking back
over the summer that was, what sporting event did you find the most memorable, and what was it that you enjoyed so much about it?
The sports world has been busier than usual this summer with the World Cup, Commonwealth Games, and closer to home, the

Redblacks bringing the CFL back to Ottawa. For me, the most memorable sporting event was on July 25th when I, along with
several friends, drove down to Verona NY to a boxing event. This championship fight card was the 200th edition of Shobox, with
four fights being shown live across the USA. One of those four fights featured Cornwall’s Tony Luis, who was fighting Wanzell
Ellison, an undefeated fighter out of New Jersey, who the promoters and TV network were big on. Luis fought a superb fight,
dominating Ellison en-route to winning a unanimous decision. One of the most memorable parts of the evening was seeing the
crowd being won over by Tony’s performance as the fight progressed. A proud and memorable moment for the local people who

Robert Walker There were two sports event that captured my attention this summer, that being the FIFA World Cup and Wimbledon. I followed
the World Cup closely due to the fact that it is largest sporting event in the world outside of the Olympics and likewise only occurs
every four years. Nations struggle just to qualify for the tournament and to watch the worlds best play the “beautiful” game was
to appreciate the game at its most elite. I followed as many matches as I could and felt the highs and lows of the teams and their
rabid fans. The second event that riveted my attention was this years Wimbledon. From Milos Raonic’s steady climb and being the
first Canadian to reach a semi final in a major to Genie Bouchard’s amazing rise and getting to the final. I am sure that everyone in
Canada followed their two storylines and the inspiration they provided by doing so well in international competition gave us all a

great injection of pride while we made the most of our summer days.

I find it hard to talk about the summer of 2014, because I really don’t know where it went. I know I watched the World Cup games
more than any other time I can recall. It was also nice to see football back on Bank St. and without the ownership sideshow that
had plagued previous incarnations of Ottawa Football. The Blue Jays, well they were hot and cold, which made it difficult to stay
interested. I think I would have to say that the events I enjoyed watching most was tennis and in particular Milos Raonic and Eugeni
Bouchard. It has been so entertaining to see them grow and develop as a players and as people and to know that Canada has at least
two world class players who still haven’t reached their peak.
